Map of stop signs to be installed across the City
Bozeman has had a long history of unsigned intersections in town. While residents may be used to stopping at four-way neighborhood intersections that lack stop signs, visitors unfamiliar with the practice are often seen driving through intersections without stopping. This practice is about to end with the start of a citywide effort to install stop signs at every uncontrolled intersection in the city.
The project will start this May and finish by 2030. Over 400 stop signs will be installed at 328 intersections. The first zone being installed is the neighborhood around Montana State University.
“Bozeman’s streets have become busier, and tourists aren’t always familiar with our streets,” explained Bozeman’s Transportation & Engineering Director Nick Ross. “We’ve heard concerns about this and uncontrolled intersections in general from residents, and we’re listening to those concerns. This is a helpful safety improvement for our neighborhood streets.”
Next year, residents of the Valley Unit neighborhood and Northeast neighborhood will see stop sign installations. 2028 will bring stop signs to the west side of town, and 2029 will cover the far west side and south side. The project ends in 2030 with the northwest side of town.
“This project aligns with our safety vision. We’ve been focusing on uncontrolled intersections and traffic calming on neighborhood streets, and for larger streets, we have looked at street reconstructions, intersection improvements, and crossing enhancements. All of this is aimed at creating a safer Bozeman for all,” explained Ross.
