The West Kagy to Babcock Sewer Improvements project will replace aging sewer transmission pipelines to maintain a resilient and reliable sewer system in southwest Bozeman. The City of Bozeman has partnered with Williams Civil Construction to construct the project in two phases over the next couple of years, beginning with improvements to the sanitary sewer system along West Kagy Boulevard in summer 2026 (Phase 1, Schedule 1).

Phase 1 will result in sewer improvements in two separate neighborhoods and will be completed over two construction seasons, which are noted as Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 on the project map.

• Schedule 1 construction will take place primarily along West Kagy Boulevard between South Tracy Avenue and South 7th Avenue, near Montana State University (MSU). Construction is expected to begin in late July and be completed by November 2026.

   

• Schedule 2 includes sewer improvements near Cooper Park, between West College and West Babcock Streets. Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2026 or spring of 2027, depending on the timeline and completion of Schedule 1. 

Phase 2 will consist of replacing aging transmission pipelines between Schedule 1 and 2 of Phase 1 and will begin following the completion of the Montana Department of Transportation’s Kagy Boulevard Reconstruction project, which is tentatively planned to start in 2027.

What to Expect during Schedule 1 construction:

• Road closures including temporary closures of the South 3rd Avenue and West Kagy Boulevard intersection
• Temporary detours directing traffic around construction
• Brief sidewalk closures which may require pedestrians to be temporarily redirected

Project Description:

The Fowler Avenue Connection project will connect Fowler Avenue from Oak Street to Huffine Lane in four phases of work. The four phases include the north section from Oak Street to Durston Road (FY26 and 27); the middle section from Durston Road to Babcock Street (FY27 and 28); the south section from Babcock Street to Huffine Lane (FY28); and the intersection of Huffine Lane and Fowler Avenue (not yet scheduled).

The intent of this project is to increase transportation choice, improve emergency service response, decrease vehicle miles traveled, and improve transportation efficiency and safety across the broader west side network. The project will enhance connectivity of the transportation system for all users. A robust and well-connected transportation system benefits city residents, businesses and visitors by improving social and economic mobility.

The project scope approved by the Bozeman City Commission includes one travel lane in each direction, separated shared use paths, traffic signalization at Babcock Street, and a round-a-bout at Durston Road.

Project Description:

The Kagy Boulevard Reconstruction Project plans to improve Kagy Boulevard between South 19th Avenue and Willson Avenue/South 3rd Avenue, equaling approximately 1.1 miles of road. The project includes intersection improvements and robust multi-modal facilities.

This project will reconstruct the road from the intersection of South 19th Avenue to Willson Avenue/South 3rd Avenue, including two vehicular travel lanes in each direction; vehicular turn lanes as needed; round-a-bouts at the intersections with South 11th and South 7th Avenues; traffic signal upgrades at the intersection with Willson and South 19th Avenues; a ten-foot shared use path on both sides of the corridor; pedestrian tunnels at South 11th and South 7th Avenues; landscaping; and street lighting.

North 27th Avenue will be reconstructed into a two-lane Connector street from Baxter Lane to Cattail Street. This project will include: turn lanes at intersections; signalization of Baxter Lane and North 27th Avenue intersection; installation of a round-a-bout at Cattail Street and North 27th Avenue; street lighting; and installation of shared use paths along both the east and west sides of the street from Baxter Lane to Cattail Street.

Project Description: 

This project consists of roadway improvements to McIlhattan Road to support the future development of the Bikefill Park.

Anticipated scope includes pavement construction, slope remediation, and stormwater management. Conceptual Design and cost estimate have been completed in partnership with Gallatin Valley Land Trust (GVLT). GVLT will continue leading design with approvals from City staff. Upon completion, the City will bid the construction project and assist in construction administration.

Project Description: 

Construction will start on the intersection of Oak Street and Ferguson Avenue this June, adding left-turn lanes in all directions. The traffic signal will be updated to offer a dedicated left turn. Additionally, the intersection of Oak Street and Ryun Sun Way will be changed to right-in, right-out turning movements only. This work addresses several crashes that have occurred at the intersection, helping to improve safety for all who travel the area. 

The intersection is expected to stay open for most of the project, though travel will be reduced to a single lane to perform the work. Construction is anticipated to wrap up in the fall. 

This intersection was identified as needing improvements following a 2025 engineering study of intersections on Oak Street. It was added to the City’s Capital Improvements Plan for construction in 2026, at an estimated cost of $900,000. An additional project at Oak Street and Flanders Mill Road was identified and constructed in 2025, bringing the total investment on Oak Street to over $1 million in the past two years.

Project Description:

These projects represent the City’s annual funding for the mill and overlay and friction seal phase of asphalt pavement maintenance. This type of maintenance is a critical component in the City’s pavement preservation program. This year's project includes mill and overlay of Baxter from Riata to Cottonwood, N 15th from Durston to Oak, and Babcock from Willson to Rouse. ADA and pedestrian safety improvements totaling more than $200,000 are included in the contract across all routes with substantial work to add curb extensions at Babcock/Black and Babcock/Bozeman.
