The City of Bozeman recently completed construction on the Riverside Lift Station, a sewer station that will pump wastewater from the Riverside community, including the Riverside Country Club and surrounding neighborhood. As of May 1, the lift station will carry wastewater and treat it at the city’s EPA award-winning Water Reclamation Facility, helping to improve the water quality of the East Gallatin River.
“This lift station is a great example of the City partnering with residents to solve a problem with improved, high-quality infrastructure,” explained Shawn Kohtz, Utilities Director at the City of Bozeman. “The Riverside community reached out to us when they discovered that their wastewater treatment system was failing. The cost of repairing that system was far greater than the cost of the City providing the infrastructure, so now we get to help residents while also treating the wastewater at a higher level.”
As part of this effort, Riverside residents requested to annex their area into city limits, and the City Commission approved the annexation.
The Water Reclamation Facility is able to filter out pollutants to a high standard, making it one of the best wastewater facilities in the state. Other smaller systems, like the Riverside community system, are often unable to filter as much out. Directing more wastewater through the Water Reclamation Facility is the most environmentally friendly option and offers greater protection of the East Gallatin River.
